Two participants of the educate-the-educator Green Wira Programme receive seed funding for their school-based sustainability initiatives.
SELANGOR (20/03/2024) – SK Telok Panglima Garang and SMK Taman Melawati have been awarded up to RM30,000 in seed funding by the Green Wira Programme (GWP) brought to you by Zero Waste Malaysia (ZWM) in collaboration with Axiata Foundation. Over the next few months until July 2024, both schools will utilise the seed funding to implement school-based sustainability initiatives. This aligns with the GWP pilot programme’s ultimate goal of encouraging the development of two Zero Waste Schools in Malaysia.
Between October 2023 to January 2024, GWP empowered 50 educators from 30 schools in the Klang Valley through structured online modules, expert-led webinars, a physical bootcamp, and customised coaching, potentially impacting over 33,000 students. Out of the pilot cohort of 50 educators, Puan Khuzaimah Zaaim from SK Telok Panglima Garang and Puan Rosmira Ramlee from SMK Taman Melawati won seed funding of up to RM15,000 per school based on the project proposals they submitted.
Over the next three months, Puan Khuzaimah Zaaim will implement a Waste Recovery Facility at SK Telok Panglima Garang with aspirations to make it an environmental education hub for students, staff, and the surrounding community. Meanwhile, Puan Rosmira Ramlee will focus reducing energy and water consumption at SMK Taman Melawati by integrating energy-efficient technologies and influencing behaviour change.
“I’m very excited about these two projects. Both educators excelled during the GWP learning phase and have strong high-level school support, which is imperative for any school-based project to succeed, ” said Irene Chooi, ZWM’s Education Programme Manager, “We received many promising proposals from our pilot cohort educators and are excited to help them further explore their ideas. We are still working closely with our GWP educators by providing informational support and access to subject experts to encourage them to keep going.”
With a combined total of around 3,500 students from the two schools, the seed funding and guidance from ZWM marks a huge step forward in pushing the green agenda in schools and fostering a deeper understanding of the Zero Waste principle among students.
